BREAKING: Tokyo Disney to Discontinue Traditional Magnetic Monorail Tickets by 2026

Goodbye, Magnet Tickets

The Tokyo Disney Resort has recently announced the discontinuation of its magnetic strip monorail tickets by July 2026. Unlike other Disney Resorts’ monorail systems, the Tokyo Disney Resort’s network is not free to use, and requires a ticket or pass. Depending on your length of stay, you may purchase a variety of passes ranging from a single-use ticket to a 6-month pass, as seen in the table below:

Ticket TypeAdult Fare (ages 12+)Child Fare (ages under 11)
Single Ticket¥300¥150
1-Day Pass¥700¥350
2-Day Pass¥900¥450
3-Day Pass¥1,200¥600
4-Day Pass¥1,500¥750
1 Month Commuter Pass¥9,000n/a
3 Month Commuter Pass¥25,650n/a
6 Month Commuter Pass¥48,600n/a

New Ticket, Who Dis?

Currently, guests insert their ticket into small rollers, which physically grab the ticket, feed it past magnetic heads (for reading and rewriting the magnetic strip), and then eject it on the opposite side. An invalid ticket will be returned. You can see the process below:

The new system, called “2D Codes” feature a QR code printed onto the paper tickets, replacing the traditional magnetic-strip technology embedded inside the paper tickets. With the new system, guests will simply scan the QR code on a reader on the entry side of the gate and be granted access. The new tickets can be seen below:

Left: Adult Single Ticket, Right: Adult 1-Day Pass

While no official reasoning for this change has been stated, I believe the change is most likely due to the maintenance requirements of the magnetic strip ticketing system inside the gates. On my most recent trip to Tokyo Disney, I saw two instances of gates out-of-commission, with the roller system open and being serviced by cast members.

In a press release, Tokyo Disney Resort released conceptual renderings of the new ticket gates and stands:

The 2D code system will be available for purchase beginning July 28th, 2025 at select ticketing stations, with the system permanently replacing magnetic tickets by July, 2026. This year-long period is most likely to implement QR code readers at more ticketing gates, as some- like the one in the video above- feature no scanner for the new tickets. Universal IC cards, such as Suica Card, can still be used on the monorail after these changes are implemented. You can read the full press release here (Japanese only).

More Than Just a Ticket

A particularly popular feature of this system are the limited-edition ticket prints guests could choose for a day pass. These range from various characters to limited-time event art that you could keep as a souvenir, as seen here with Donald’s Quacky Duck! Duck! Duck City! limited-time in-park event.

Other Recent Monorail Changes

This is not the only monorail system adjustment made recently. Just over a year ago, Tokyo Disney Resort increased monorail ticket fares, altering the single-ticket cost from ¥260 to ¥300, and the one-day pass from ¥660 to ¥700, a 15.4% and 6% increase, respectively.

Around the same time in March, 2024, Tokyo Disney Resort also began offering group ticket fares, allowing groups of 25 or more to save 10% on monorail ticket prices, with school groups of 25 or more saving 20%. Group tickets are purchasable up to 6 months in advance.

The Tokyo Disney Monorail System

Arguably among the most convenient theme park transportation systems in the world, the Tokyo Disney monorail system services 4 stations, featuring stops at Disneyland, DisneySea, the Resort Gateway & Ikspiari, and the Bayside hotel district.

The monorail runs counterclockwise one-way, with trains departing every 4-13 minutes, depending on crowd levels and time of day. Lockers can be found at the base of each station, as well as souvenir coin machines with limited designs.
