The Tokyo Disney Resort today announced the limited release of a long-absent ticket offering: the 1-Day Park Hopper ticket.
Beginning this summer from July 2nd to September 15th, a park hopper ticket option will be available for guests to purchase. Guests may choose to start their day at either Disneyland or DisneySea, then from 11am, guests may travel between the two parks as they please.
Double the Parks, Double the Cost (almost)
For this “new” park hopper offering, prices will range as follows:

The increase in cost above a regular passport is not to be understated; 80% is quite significant- by paying just 20% or a few thousand yen (~$20) more than a 1-Day Park Hopper Passport, you can purchase a second standard 1-Day Passport.
What About the Other Resorts?
Comparing this cost to the other 2-park Disney Resorts around the world, Disneyland Resort in Anaheim, California, and Disneyland Paris in Paris, France, we see that the increase in cost for a park hopper is a far more reasonable 49% and 33%, respectively.

Note that for these parks, Disney directly prices ticket, whereas in Tokyo, the Oriental Land Company (OLC) decides on pricing, not Disney, so this comparison is only valuable to a degree.
Park Hopping Isn’t a Walk in the Park…
There are a few other pitfalls to the 1-Day Park Hopper Passport. For instance, unlike Anaheim and Paris, the Tokyo Disney parks’ entrances aren’t located next to each other. Instead, the entrances are located on opposing sides of the resort, which is a 24min, 1-mile (1.7km) walk. This lengthy distance almost necessitates the purchase of a 1-day monorail passport, reducing the travel time to a 5 to 10-minute monorail ride.

Furthermore, to travel between the two parks, you must leave the “sterile” security zone, meaning you have to go through security screening again to move between the two parks. All of these logistics means it can take upwards of 30-45 minutes to move from the entrance of one park to the other, depending on monorail frequency, security lines, and ticketing.
That’s All to Say…
Right now, we cannot recommend purchasing a park hopper ticket on account of poor value. Instead, we would consider a full second day at the parks, or, if you’re short on time, a 1-and-a-half day itinerary that includes a weeknight or evening passport. The latter of these itineraries will be nearly identical in cost to purchasing a single-day park hopper!
Stay tuned for future analysis of park hopping and its value to you the guest.
